A Visit from Members of the Provincial Parliament of Lower Saxony, Germany: 30 May 2025

Stellenbosch 肆客足球 (SU) hosted a delegation of 20 Members of the Provincial Parliament from Lower Saxony, Germany. Facilitated by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung South Africa, the visit focused on key issues in higher education, including funding models, international academic cooperation, and academic freedom.
The programme featured a keynote address by Prof Sam Tshehla, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Strategy, Global and Corporate Affairs, and a thoughtful discussion with SU staff, including Dr Heidi October, Deputy Director of Leadership at the Centre for Student Life and Learning, whose presence reflected SU’s longstanding engagement with KAS through initiatives such as the annual Frederik van Zyl Slabbert Honorary Lecture. The delegation expressed a strong interest in learning more about SU’s work, particularly about current challenges and innovative solutions in research, teaching, and international cooperation. The visit provided a platform for mutual exchange on key issues such as funding models for higher education, the scope of international academic collaboration, and the balance between academic freedom and state involvement in research.?
