Arrangements for final assessments of 2025

The final A2 and A3 assessments of the year have been scheduled from Monday, 27 October to Saturday, 6 December 2025 in invigilated, sit-down mode and will take place in assessment venues on the Stellenbosch campus.

How to view your assessment timetable

Please read the student user guide and carefully follow the steps as indicated to access your assessment (exam) timetable. This student user guide also includes screen visuals to assist you in navigating the process. You will need your SUnumber@sun.ac.za (username) and password to access your SUNStudent profile.

SUNStudent does not have a mobile-friendly interface yet and using a mobile phone to access information on SUNStudent may affect views. It is advisable to use your laptop/computer (and not your mobile phone) to access venue information on your assessment timetable in SUNStudent.?

Please note that the view on the SUNStudent student portal shows the assessments managed centrally only and excludes assessments managed by the respective departments themselves (please contact your lecturers for the schedule and venue details for modules managed by your academic departments. In many cases, this information will be provided to students through SUNLearn).

How to view your assessment venue on SUNStudent

All students are required to familiarise themselves with the instructions on how to find their assessment venues on SUNStudent for modules administered by the Assessment Office. We have developed a "how-to guide" to assist you in this regard. Click here to access the guide.

Please consult academic departments directly to confirm the venues for assessments arranged by them.

Assessment rules

Students are reminded to strictly adhere to all the assessment rules. Please take note of the comprehensive Rules for students at the Stellenbosch Campus assessment venues, which can be viewed here. These rules apply to Stellenbosch campus students, as well as some students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences who write their assessments on the Stellenbosch campus.

Please take particular note of the following rules regarding cell phones and other electronic devices in all assessment venues:

  • Cell phones must be switched off at all times when in an assessment venue. While at their seats, students must place their cell phones in a non-transparent bag on the desk in front of them for the full duration of the assessment. Only after leaving the assessment venue may students remove these devices from the bag and turn them on.
  • Students are not allowed to bring personal laptops or other electronic devices into venues where written assessments take place.

Leave-of-absence from assessment activities

All students must adhere to the relevant academic activity¨s (e.g., class, practical, clinical, research or assessment activities) attendance requirements that form part of the curriculum of the relevant degree, certificate, or diploma programme they are registered for. In the event of absence from any academic activity, including A2 and A3 assessments, students should refer to section 12 of the General Yearbook 2025 (Part 1, page 25) for comprehensive information regarding leave of absence.

If a student is absent from an A2 or A3 assessment opportunity due to illness or other causes, the lecturer/s of the relevant module/s should be consulted without delay.

  • Where such absence is due to illness, an application for leave of absence form must be lodged with the Registrar without delay, except if the absence was for one test only, in which case not the Registrar but the relevant lecturer will handle the leave of absence. The application form must be accompanied by a medical certificate which complies with specific requirements.
  • The application for leave of absence (LOA) form should also be submitted for co-curricular activities by the Division of Student Affairs or sport activities by Maties Sport.

Accommodation of religious considerations

Stellenbosch 肆客足球 respects the religious beliefs and cultures of all staff and students. As a result, in addition to national public holidays during which the 肆客足球 will be closed for business, no assessments will be scheduled on the days listed below (applicable to 2025 only). With the exception of Saturdays and Sundays, the 肆客足球 will remain open and operational on these days.

Wednesday 29 January 2025 - Chinese New Year
Monday 31 March 2025 - Eid-ul-Fitr (tentative)
Sunday 13 April 2025 - Passover (Pesach) Day 1
Sunday 20 April 2025 - Passover (Pesach) Day 8
Saturday 7 June 2025 - Eid-ul-Adha (tentative)
Tuesday 23 September 2025 - Rosh Hashanah Day 1**
Wednesday 24 September 2025 - Rosh Hashanah Day 2
Thursday 2 October 2025 - Yom Kippur**
Monday 20 October 2025 - Diwali
** These religious days start the evening before, so no assessments to be scheduled after 17:30 on the previous evening.

Students who cannot make use of an assessment opportunity due to religious constraints, are accommodated in a similar way to students that were ill during that assessment opportunity or participated in sport events or experienced trauma of any nature.

Please note that no other assessment opportunities in addition to those scheduled normally will be provided if you do not make use of an assessment opportunity due to constraints imposed by your religion.

When compiling assessment timetables, the Timetable Office will attempt to avoid scheduling more than one of the A1, A2, and A3 assessments (or corresponding assessments for year modules) on days that more commonly incur religious constraints.

Module assessment clashes

The fact that students may be allowed to register for modules that clash on A2 and A3 assessment timetables, does not grant them the right to be accommodated with regard to clashes on the assessment timetables, in any other way than as described below:

  • If you experience clashes on timetables during the A2 period, you will not be accommodated by the Assessments Office nor normally by the home faculty. In such cases, you have to take the A2 assessment for the one module, and the A3 assessment for the other clashing module.
  • If you experience clashes on timetables during the A3 period for assessments that are administered by the Assessments Office, you are accommodated by the Assessments Office. This accommodation entails that arrangements will be made for the clashing assessments to be written one immediately after the other during the A3 period and under supervision as arranged by the Assessments Office.

Refer to section 6.1 of the Yearbook 2025 (General Rules) for detailed information regarding time-table-related assessment provisions.

A3 assessments for final-year students (2025)

Final-year students who make use of an A3 assessment opportunity (irrespective of the reason) in November/December 2025, in a prerequisite module for their qualification, will not be able to graduate in December 2025. These final-year students will be awarded their qualifications at one of the ceremonies during the graduation week from 23 to 27 March 2026. ?

New assessment answer book

Stellenbosch 肆客足球 introduced a new assessment (examination) answer book in 2024. All students are required to familiarise themselves with the instructions and the signing of the declaration on the front cover. Students must also familiarise themselves with the assessment rules on the back cover of the new assessment answer books. Please take note of the information on the front and back covers before you to leave for your assessment venue. Examples of the covers can be viewed here.

How to access A2, A3, and final marks

Marks for the A2 and A3 assessments, as well as the final end-of-year results will be communicated to students via the SUNStudent portal. Refer to the student guide: Access Examination Results and follow the step-by-step instructions.?

As yet, students cannot see whether they qualify for an A3 assessment on the SUNStudent portal. Students who qualify, will be informed by either the lecturer or the academic department via SUNLearn or a channel determined by the department.

The decision about admission to the A3 assessment should be recorded preferably at least five assessment days before the particular module's A3 assessment, but not less than three assessment days. Unless public holidays, Monday to Saturday are regarded as assessment days. For shorter notice periods motivated permission has to be obtained from the dean of the faculty or division head of the centre. This deviation must be communicated to students in the first two weeks after the start of a module. Please note that the due dates for finalising marks, as published in the almanac, take priority over the above provision for three or five assessment days.

The venue allocation for an A3 assessment will be available on the SUNStudent portal at least one to two days before the date of a specific A3 assessment.

The A3 venue timetable (per module/per date/per session for non-concession students who may find discrepencies or cannot view their timetables in SUNStudent, will be uploaded to this webpage at least ONE day before the scheduled A3 assessment date,

Due to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), venues for concession assessments may not be published on this assessments webpage for students. The Client Services Centre, temporarily based in the Inorganic Chemistry building in Bosman Street (directly opposite Huis Marais) will assist with venue queries from students with assessment concessions. The Client Services Centre van also be reached via email (info@sun.ac.za) or 021 808-9111.

  • Tuesday, 25 November 2025: Final day for academic departments to load final marks obtained in the November A2 assessment period.

?Official midyear assessment results and academic transcripts

The official midyear assessment results and academic transcripts showing a 'pass degree' for students who meet their degree requirements in the middle of an academic year, will be available once marks have been ratified and administrative processes have been completed by early August of that academic year. Updated information will be published on the A2 and A3 assessments home page.

A2 and A3 assessments: end-of-year 2025

Important assessment periods ?

  • ?A2 assessments: Monday, 27 October to Wednesday, 19 November 2025.
  • A3 assessments: Thursday, 20 November to Saturday, 6 December 2025.?

Assessment Policy

Stellenbosch 肆客足球 recognises that assessment is an integral part of learning and teaching. In its Assessment Policy, assessment is described as the ^systematic evaluation of students' abilities to demonstrate their having achieved the learning goals set for a curriculum (CHE, 2016:2)". This can include a variety of tasks, products, outputs or competencies used to gather evidence and compare the students' performance against the set assessment criteria and outcomes.?

Assessment types and assessment periods?

It is each student's own responsibility to ensure that they understand each aspect of assessments at Stellenbosch 肆客足球, and timeously take note of the information provided.

  • This assessments webpage provides information specific to the undergraduate A2 and A3 assessments scheduled and administered centrally by the Assessment Administration, Academic records and Graduation Office (AARGO) on the Stellenbosch campus, further referred to as the Assessment Office. This group includes students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences who also write their assessments on the Stellenbosch campus.
  • Arrangements for campus-specific assessments are communicated by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Faculty of Military Medicine and the entities of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences on the Bellville Park campus.
  • Other assessments ! for example A1, AF and A4 ! are scheduled and administered by a module¨s home department or centre. Students should liaise with their lecturers in this regard.
  • Refer to Section 4 (Assessment periods) on page 38 in the Yearbook 2025, Part 1 (General rules) for further details on the respective assessment periods.
