Assessment concessions

Assessment concessions for students with special needs can include extra writing time; spelling concession; writing in a separate venue; handwriting concession; oral assessment; computer room or assistive technology; a scribe; reading assistance or amanuensis (reads question and writes answers); a well-lit venue; a braille room; use of a wheelchair; enlarged letter sizes, prompters; or SA sign language interpreters. Refer to section 6.8 on the Accommodation of special needs during main assessments in the Yearbook 2025, Part 1, page 48 (General rules)

  • A student can apply for Assessment Concessions with valid proof of a medical condition.
  • Concession-related queries — including emergency concession requests — can be directed to the Disability Unit (concessions@sun.ac.za); Ms Melanie Willems (mwillems@sun.ac.za) or Dr Marcia Lyner-Cleophas (cleophas@sun.ac.za).
  • Students can access their concession letters via the SUNStudent portal. The process is explained in the Access Exam Timetable and Concession Letter?.
  • The Client Services Centre, temporarily based in the Inorganic Chemistry building in Bosman Street (directly opposite Huis Marais) will assist with A3 venue queries from students with assessment concessions. Due to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), these venues may not be published on this assessments webpage for students.   • Application date for assessment concessions for the second semester: Monday, 21 July — Friday, 1 August 2025.
